So it's Psych test time, and here I am in the library, studying like the loser I know that you love that I am. I figure the only way to really get through this on the computer (successfully) is to subject you to my painful mnemonics about personality.
I. PSYCHODYNAMIC (FREUDIAN)
-Id. Unconscious. Like "The Wizard of Id," because I read it on Sundays, when I'm basically unconscious.
-Eros. Latin roots, yo.
-Thanatos. Death instinct. Like "Xanatos," only with a lisp. And Xanatos was the bad guy on "Gargoyles," and he was destructive and aggressive.
-Ego = conscious. Because I'm very conscious of myself.
-Reality Principle: compromise. You know who was real? Henry Clay was real. And he was "The Great Compromiser".
-Superego! Conscience. Like a superhero has a conscience!
-constant battle btwn id, ego, superego.
DEFENSE MECHANISMS. Most of these I know.
-Projection = attribution of unacceptable thoughts to another source. *hand motion of 'projection' here*
-Sublimation = making socially unacceptable impulses socially acceptable. Like subliminal messages are more acceptable than "BUY OUR FOODS" in the middle of a movie.
-Compensation = I'll pay you if you don't tell anyone I'm afraid.
ORAL STAGE. If weaned too early, pessimism and bitterness. Keep yo' mouth shut. If weaned too late, overindulged, dependent, gullible. Because they have a big mouth.
Skip skip skip skip.
CRITIQUE OF FREUD - I have written in my notes "sucky," which I don't think is the technical critique. But it's DETERMINISTIC. Meaning all subconscious and we have no control over it.
NEO-FREUDIANS
JUNG. Collective unconscious. Inherited universal memories from ancestors, like cavemen, who made fire. I knew someone whose last name was Jung. Someone set her hair on fire.
ADLER. Striving for superiority and birth order. Just like Grace Adler on "Will & Grace" is always striving for superiority, and is always plagued by her sisters and her place in the birth order.
HORNEY. Coping. COMPLIANCE: you overcome anxiety by getting closer to people. That's actually me, according to the test we took in class. AGRESSION: seek to dominate. WITHDRAWAL: apathy.
OBJECT RELATION THEORISTS: First relationship btwn infant and (usually) mother is most important developmental factor.
II. TRAIT APPROACH
A. IDIOGRAPHIC VIEW: everyone has unique set of traits. Case study-reliant. And because everyone's traits are different, everyone thinks everyone else is an idiot. An idiotgraph, at that.
ALLPORT: cardinal, central, and secondary traits. He looks at ALL your traits.
B. NOMOTHETIC VIEW: people have same traits, manifested to different degrees. Self-report questionnaire. NO, MOron. As in idiot. As in idiographic.
CATTELL 16 PERSONALITY FACTOR: 16 dimensions of personality, all manifested differently in different people. Sounds like Kim Cattrall from "Sex and the City," who had... personality? By which I mean hair. I didn't watch the show, myself.
BIG FIVE. OCEAN = openness, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism = personality factors.
EYSENCK. The one with the circle of traits/combinations of traits: introversion-extroversion and emotionality-stability. Eysenck you very much, Eysenck, for letting me be me on a circle. A circle of life, no less.
GRAY'S APPROACH-INHIBITION THEORY: BAS: Behavioral Approach System. Reward system. Uninhibited! Extroverts are sensitive to it. BIS: Behavioral Inhibition System. Punishment system. Opposite of BAS. Introverts are sensitive to it.
GENETICS. Behavioral. Twins are similar. Heritability coefficient in general = .3-.6 (30%-60%)
SKIP. I know most of this.
MBTI = MYERS-BRIGGS TYPE INDICATOR. E/I, S/N, T/F, J/P. I took that test. I felt like I'd been locked in the brig with Mr. Meyers, because he was a teacher at my middle school and he made people take tests.
III. SOCIAL-COGNITIVE APPROACH. Learn through observing others in social situations.
ROTTER. Expectancy theory: decision influenced by what you *expect* to happen next and how much value you place on it. Locus of control: Internals attribute everything to selves, including punishments. Locusts in your internals would probably be your fault. Externals don't feel they have control. External locusts are probably not your fault.
BANDURA = observational.
MISCHEL = cognitive personal variables.
Ack. Out of time.
I hope you've all learned something today.
